On September 22, 2000, Maine Governor Angus King, Jr. presented BIW with a
Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence in the Pollution Prevention
Category.
The award was for installation of in-line silver recovery units (SRU). on
photographic processing units. BIW reduced the amount of photographic waste by
73% or 10,890 lbs. /year at the 
Bath facility.
Photographic waste was reduced by 50% or 700 lbs. /year at the East Brunswick Manufacturing Facility.
BIW uses several photographic developers for Blue Printing, Non Destructive Testing and x-rays in the medical department. Photographic wastes are generated as a result of these processes. The waste contains silver and historically was disposed of as hazardous waste. Through installation of the in-line SRU’s, the only waste generated is silver-contaminated filter cartridges.
