Governor’s Environmental Award: 2002

On September 20, 2002, Maine Governor Angus King, Jr. presented BIW with a Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence in Pollution Prevention.

The award was for two projects completed by BIW employees. The first project involved the reformulation of the 'Brulin' solution used to clean pipe at EBMF and Bath. The old product leached trace amounts of lead from the pipe, causing the solution to become hazardous waste. Scott Sheppard (Environmental Specialist) worked with Craig Barton (EBMF Pipe Shop Supervisor) and the vendor to reformulate the product to remove the chemical causing the leaching. This initiative has resulted in a reduction of 7,000 pounds of hazardous waste and saved over $18,000 in disposal and analysis costs in the past 2 years.

The second project was for the implementation of the solvent segregation and distillation process implemented at Bath, Hardings and EBMF. Solvent used for cleaning paint equipment is segregated into separate drums and then distilled. The distilled solvent is reused for cleaning again. Don Strout (Environmental Engineer) was project leader. The following mechanics were instrumental in the project's success: Bob Hilts, Dean Daigle, Louie Cloutier, and Doug Burch. To date the process has reduced over 30,000 pounds of hazardous waste and resulted in a total cost savings of over $32,000."
