2004 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence
On November 5, 2004, Governor John Baldacci presented a 2004 Governor’s Award For Environmental Excellence to BIW recognizing, for the third consecutive year, the success of our environmental programs.

Receiving this year’s award on behalf of all BIW employees were Vince Dickinson, Manager of Environmental Operations, and Scott Shepherd, Environmental Engineer.

In presenting the award, it was noted that BIW, “as one of the State of Maine's largest employers, maintains a fundamental concept encouraging continual improvement within its environmental, health & safety policy.”

The award specifically recognized BIW for two key accomplishments. First was our efforts at mentoring small businesses. Noting that mentoring is a commitment laid out in our STEP-UP agreement, it was stated that BIW “exceeded its agreement in mentoring Maine boat builders with environmental management and pollution prevention issues”, and that our “mentoring efforts with other boat builders has been truly exceptional.”

The second area of recognition was for meeting our solid waste (10%) and hazardous waste (16%) reduction commitments at our 3 manufacturing facilities. It was stated that BIW is “committed to improving its business practices to protect the environment, and it also inspires other businesses to seek improvements in their own environmental practices.”
