2008
Governor's Award
On Monday, March 17, 2008, Maine Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner David Littell presented a Governor's Award for Carbon Emission Reductions to BIW. Nineteen other Maine businesses and organizations were honored at the same event. The awards recognize and celebrate efforts in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions which cumulatively help Maine in its efforts to reduce climate change impacts.
Stephanie Carver, Environmental Engineer, and Steve Frantz, Facility Engineer received this year's award on behalf of all BIW employees.
The award specifically recognized BIW for reducing carbon emissions by 15% from the baseline year of 2003 through 2006. These reductions were achieved primarily through the energy reduction initiatives that were undertaken throughout all facilities. BIW was recognized for this honor through the participation in the Maine STEP-UP program. BIW will continue to reduce these emissions in upcoming years.
2006
Governor's Award
On Friday, January 26, 2007, Governor John Baldacci presented a Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence to BIW for achieving our solid waste and paper reduction goals. Several other Maine STEP-UP companies were similarly honored at the same event. Maine Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner, David Littell, was on hand for the presentation.
Judy Golek, Industrial Hygienist, Stephanie Carver, Environmental Engineer, and Vince Dickinson, Manager of Environmental Operations received this year's award on behalf of all BIW employees.
The award specifically recognized BIW for exceeding our goals for reduction of solid waste (5%) and paper usage (5%). BIW employees achieved a 6.6% reduction in solid waste disposal and 35% reduction in paper usage a full year ahead of our STEP-UP commitment. This is the 5th Governor's Award that BIW has received since 2000.
2004

EPA
On May 17, 2005, EPA Region 1 (New England) Regional Administrator Robert Varney presented Bath Iron Works with an Environmental Merit Award recognizing BIW for becoming a member of EPA's National Performance Track Program and for "outstanding efforts in preserving New England's environment." Performance Track is a nationwide voluntary partnership program that recognizes and rewards private and public sector organizations that consistently demonstrate environmental compliance above and beyond legal requirements.
For more than three decades, EPA Region 1 has honored teachers, community activists, business leaders, scientists, government officials, and others who have exemplified true leadership in protecting public health and New England's environment.

Governor's Award
On November 5, 2004, Governor John Baldacci presented a 2004 Governor's Award For Environmental Excellence to BIW recognizing, for the third consecutive year, the success of our environmental programs.
Receiving this year's award on behalf of all BIW employees were Vince Dickinson, Manager of Environmental Operations, and Scott Shepherd, Environmental Engineer.
In presenting the award, it was noted that BIW, "as one of the State of Maine's largest employers, maintains a fundamental concept encouraging continual improvement within its environmental, health & safety policy."
2003
EPA
On July 9, 2003 Thomas Gibson, EPA Chief of Staff, recognized Bath Iron Works and several other shipyards for "Outstanding leadership in implementing an environmental management system as part of the Shipbuilding & Ship Repair Environmental Management System Pilot."

Governor's Award
On November 7, 2003, Maine Governor John Baldacci. presented BIW with an Award for achieving two of our STEP-UP goals.
As part of BIW's STEP-UP Agreement with the State of Maine, BIW agreed to reduce the amount of solid waste disposed of by 10% per equivalent DDG compared to 2001 levels. BIW achieved this goal during 2002.
By January 2006 BIW also agreed to reduce Hazardous Waste per DDG (compared to 2001) at each of its three manufacturing facilities by the following:
- 16% at Bath Facility
- 25% at Hardings Facility
- 3% at EBMF
In 2002, BIW achieved reductions of 17% at the Bath Facility! BIW also won this award twice earlier in the decade, in 2000 and 2002.
