Partnerships
BIW’s Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) policy states that we will comply with EHS regulations and continuously improve our processes to reduce injuries, illness, and prevent pollution. Part of our strategy for achieving these commitments is to form partnerships with regulatory agencies to work in a variety of ways improve environmental, health & safety performance with reduced regulatory burden. BIW believes that working together with regulatory agencies can remove existing barriers so that breakthrough performance, on both sides, can be achieved. BIW has established partnerships with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (STEP-UP program), the U.S. EPA (National Performance Track program and Sector Strategies Program).
Outreach
Environmental Forums: We periodically host forums with the community to describe our environmental efforts, report performance and receive feedback. Click on the link to see when the next meeting is scheduled.
Earth Day: We conduct several outreach events each year on Earth Day to highlight environmental awareness in our employees, families and community.
Worker’s Memorial Day: We host an annual ceremony on Worker’s Memorial Day to emphasize the importance of safety & health in the workplace.
BIW Family Day: Each year on BIW Family Day we reach out to our families to emphasize the importance of safety in every facet of our lives.
To facilitate the distribution of information to and receipt of feedback from the community on environmental matters, multiple communication channels have been set up. In addition to the regular mail, telephone and FAX, employees and interested members of the public may reach our Environmental Operations Team through a dedicated e-mail address (environmental@gdbiw.com). Interested individuals may also sign up to receive periodic environmental bulletins through your e-mail that will help keep you informed of progress, events, and environmental activities of interest that are happening at BIW or within the community.
