BIW (as part of the American Shipbuilding Association (ASA)) is working in partnership with the the U.S. EPA Sector Strategies Program (http://www.epa.gov/sectors/shipbuilding/index.html)and the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) to promote environmental management systems (EMS), overcome regulatory barriers to performance improvement, and measure environmental progress in the shipbuilding & ship repair industry.
BIW partnered with EPA to participate on the Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Environmental Management System (EMS) Pilot Project. BIW, along with several other shipyards across the country, worked with EPA to implement an EMS and to develop an EMS Implementation Guide for the Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Industry (http://www.epa.gov/sectors/shipbuilding/ship_ems.html#ems). This guide is a tool for other shipyards to implement EMS, based on input from the pilot yards.
