Every year on April 28, BIW commemorates worker
memorial day at the shipyard. Speakers are brought in to address the
employees of BIW. This provides an opportunity to emphasize the need to
work safely every day.
Worker Memorial Day was remembered this year with a variety of methods. Shifts started or ended with members from the Unions and Management handing out videotapes of Charlie Morecraft’s visit to Bath Iron Works. Mr. Morecraft was a worker who experienced a life-altering accident after taking several shortcuts with some rules and procedures at his place of business. He shares his accident and its effects on him and his family with companies nationwide in order to help other employees not to make similar mistakes. Later that day, speakers from OSHA, Bath Iron Works, and the Navy spoke to thousands of employees at a gathering in front of the MSC building. All speakers stressed the importance of safety and health in the workplace and a moment of silence was held for those workers who had perished in the past all across America.
