BIW has established several programs to manage solid
waste.
Source Recycling - BIW has a program to collect recyclable material at the point of generation. Wood, cardboard, metal, shop towels, abrasive blast grit, and cleaning solvents are all recycled at BIW. BIW recycles approximately 75% of its total solid waste. |

| Solvent Distillation - BIW operates solvent distillation units at all of its manufacturing facilities. Approximately 90% of our hazardous waste is from the painting process. A major component of this waste is the solvent used to clean the spray painting equipment. Spray painters segregate left-over paint from the spent cleaning solvent. The spent cleaning solvent is processed through solvent distillation units. The units remove the solids (residual paint and debris). The distilled solvent is then reused again for cleaning, and the process is repeated. |
