Pollution Prevention: Control of Water Quality

BIW has established several programs to control potential water pollution.

Storm Water Treatment -BIW has installed control equipment in two critical areas of the shipyard to treat storm water runoff prior to discharging to the Kennebec River. The first area is the Land Level Transfer Facility (LLTF). This 15-acre parcel of land houses many operations that can impact storm water quality. All the storm water run-off from the LLTF discharges through Vortechnic® Units. These units remove solids and oils from the run-off prior to discharge into the river.

The second critical area is the maintenance garage. Rolling stock and other equipment is brought to this area when repairs are needed. Inherent with many repairs is leaking oil and despite good housekeeping the potential still exists for storm water to contain oil. BIW has installed an in-line oil/water separator to the discharge end of the storm water collection system in this area to remove any petroleum products contained in the run-off.

Storm Water BMP’s - BIW has established a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWP3) to identify potential storm water pollution sources and to establish Best Management Practices (BMP’s) to minimize pollution. The program includes routine inspection for potential pollution and process specific procedures to minimize pollution.

Petroleum Control Program - One significant aspect of BIW’s operations is the use and storage of petroleum products. Due to our position along the Kennebec River, an oil release could be a serious impact. BIW utilizes 100% secondary containment around all oil storage tanks. These tanks and containment systems are routinely inspected for integrity.

In addition, BIW has a strict program for transferring fuel and strong contingency plans for dealing with an spills that could occur.
