Correct Footwear Is Mandatory

Protect Your Feet!

It's simply plain common sense to protect your feet in an industrial environment. The BIW shipyard and all manufacturing locations mandate the wearing of safety shoes that meet the national ASTM F2413 (formerly ANSI Z41) standard. Don't take chances. Whether you're 'just visiting' or work here, wear safety shoes whenever you are in a manufacturing area, or in transit through outdoor areas where manufacturing takes place.

How To Be Sure

Effective January 1, 2005 all personnel in BIW manufacturing areas, including both employees and non-employees, are required to wear ANSI Z41 approved footwear. To be certain that your footwear complies with ANSI Z41 requirements, look for the ANSI Z41 designation and the impact (I) and compression resistance (C) codes on the label attached to the shoe as shown in the illustration. Don't risk your feet with generic steel-toe or hard-toe shoes. A typical label is shown below. This safety designation is superceded by the ASTM F2413 standard, essentially similar.

For a list of some local Maine retailers who stock ASTM F2413/ANSI Z41 compliant footwear, click here. Several of these stores have agreed to provide a discount to BIW employees. However, many stores carry these products and this list is neither all inclusive nor does it imply BIW endorsement of any one retailer over another. The BIW Employee's Store will continue to carry regulation-compliant footwear and offers a payroll deduction plan for interested employees.
