A surface ship of superior quality and affordability begins with expertise in design and engineering. BIW offers a Engineering (296810 bytes)comprehensive engineering team consisting of engineers and designers skilled in mechanical, structural, electrical, civil, marine, and material engineering disciplines, naval architects, and material procurement professionals. This team is responsible for implementing challenging solutions into major US Navy programs: FFG 7 Class, DDG 51 Class, DD(X), and LCS Class ships. The group provides practical, technically-sound, yet innovative and affordablEngineering (258476 bytes)e solutions to engineering challenges for both existing ship classes and class upgrades, as well as new advanced hull forms and ship designs.

BIW’s engineering capability ranges from advanced technology and concept development to first-of-class ship design, where engineering and design is developed and Engineering  (301174 bytes)maintained for an entire class of ships. BIW’s comprehensive support of the DDG 51 design includes producibility and affordability accomplishments, as well as major upgrades. The design process used for this upgrade marks the first time a surface ship of the DDG 51’s complexity was designed entirely using CAD. Engineering activity is supported by an Integrated Product Development Environment (IPDE).
