We've been leaders in naval shipbuilding for over 100 years, and that's right where we intend to stay. BIW is the undisputed leader in building surface combatants in the United States.
We've made huge changes in our construction methods in the past decade. With them have come revolutionary changes in our engineering and design. Sophisticated new 3D CAD methods allowed us to develop the design for DDG 1000 to a 'ready to build' level of completion. When full-rate production of the first ship began in February 2009, the fabrication and assembly process for the ship had been tested to the extent that it will be 'built as a follow ship.'
It's unprecedented in US Navy history for a new class of ship to have been given such a head start. We employ bright motivated engineers, led by seasoned pros. BIW is not just any shipyard, and its engineers are the cream of the crop.
