Keel laid August 5,1891, launched February 4,1893, delivered November 1,1895, commissioned June 8,1896. 

An experimental ship which because of design changes was obsolete when launched. This was the third steel ship built by Bath Iron Works and 1 man was lost in its construction. Reached 16.11 knots on trials. Had 4 six pounder rapid firing rifles. To New York after delivery where it spent 1 year at dockside and was decommissioned in 1897. Recommissioned March 1898 and used in harbor defense at Key West during the Spanish-American War though saw no service. Decommissioned October 1898. Designated Ballistic Experimental Target "A" in 1909 and sunk as a target in 1916 off Rappahannock Spit, Virginia.
