| Steam Yacht for William A. Slater of Slaterville, R.I.
and Norwich, Ct. Length: 243' Beam: 32' Depth: 18'-1" Draft: 13'-4" Displacement: 803 (light ship), 1,136 (full load) Other Data: 1 triple expansion steam engine, 1,000 horsepower. Keel laid October 5,1893, launched May 7,1894, delivered October 6,1894. Steam-powered and 3-masted bark rigged with 11,000 square feet of canvas. She was the biggest American yacht of her day when launched. In the first 2 years after delivery sailed around the World with a complement of 7 officers and 32 crew members, carrying 7 boats ranging from 20 to 29 feet long. Approximately 1900 sold to Charles F. Baker, Jr. and renamed WACOUTA. April 1917 was donated to the United States Navy for use in World War I. Was converted to an armed patrol boat and renamed HARVARD, used as convoy escort and in patrol duty. Picked up 30 survivors of the British EXFORD, July 15,1917 and 59 survivors of the British TRELISSICK, July 16,1917. Returned to owners in 1919 and later sold to Greek owners, running as inter-island passenger steamer between Greece and Italy. She was still in operation in the 1950's. |
