700-Ton Paulding Class Destroyer for the United States Navy Keel laid July 24,1909, launched April 12,1910, delivered September 23,1910, commissioned September 29,1910. Lead ship of Class. First Bath Iron Works destroyer to use fuel oil and second oil-fired ship in the United States Navy. Reached 32.8 knots on trials. Complement of 6 officers and 97 enlisted. Went ashore in 1912 on a sandspit, stern in 5' of sand; dug out by close passing ships and backed out under her own power, no damage. To Queenstown for patrol and convoy escort duty in World War I. Returned to the United States at the end of the war. Decommissioned August 1919 and placed in reserve. Transferred to the United States Coast Guard April 28,1924 and redesignated CG-17, for the Treasury Department to hunt for bootleggers during Prohibition. On December 17,1927 PAULDING hit U.S. Sub S-4 at Provincetown, sub lost with crew of 40. After repair was placed back in Prohibition service. Returned to the United States Navy October 18,1930 and placed in reserve. Stricken from the United States Navy List June 28,1934 and scrapped the same year. |
