3 B&W boilers, 2 geared steam turbines, 50,000 horsepower, 1 stack, 1 mast, twin screws, single rudder. 

Keel laid July 15,1937, launched April 8,1939, delivered and commissioned August 1,1939. Lead ship of Class. 

Reached 35 knots on trials. Complement of 10 officers and 182 enlisted. Assigned to convoy escort duty in the Atlantic. Reassigned to the Pacific Fleet after the attack on Pearl Harbor. On May 7,1942, while in the Coral Sea, was attacked by 24 Japanese dive bombers shooting down 5 of them but then was hit by 3 - 500 pound bombs. The ship sank and on going down her depth charges exploded, throwing some large parts of the wreckage 15’ up out of the water. This sinking resulted in the loss of almost 200 men with only 16 survivors.
