Keel laid May 16,1938, launched December 9,1939, delivered June 14,1940, commissioned June 19,1940. 

Lead ship of Class. Reached 35 knots on trials. Complement of 9 officers and 199 enlisted. Assigned to convoy escort duty in North Atlantic for World War II. Off Salerno, Italy October 9,1943, together with the British LCT-170, rescued 57 survivors of the U.S.S. BUCK which had been sunk by 2 torpedoes with a loss of 150 men. Decommissioned May 8,1946. Designated a War Memorial for the Smithsonian Institute; but the Institution was unable to save her. Stricken from the United States Navy List November 1,1969 and sold for scrap June 29,1972.
