Keel laid May 21,1984, launched December 8,1984, delivered April 1,1986, commissioned April 12,1986. 

Reached 28.5 knots on trials. Complement of 17 officers and 198 enlisted. Assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. In the Persian Gulf April 18,1988, hit an Iranian M-08 mine on the port side (Fr.276), 4 feet from the keel. A hole 15' x 20' was blown in the hull, knocking the main engines off their foundations and almost breaking the ship in half, 10 injured. Later rebuilt at Bath Iron Works Portland Facility and returned to service. Served in the Persian Gulf War.
