Keel laid February 3,1994, launched February 18,1995, delivered June 14,1996, commissioned October 12,1996 at Ingleside, Texas.

Complement of 26 officers and 315 enlisted. On November 12,1996 the ship struck a submerged object while leaving St. Martin, Virgin Islands. The sonar dome was damaged and blades were broken off of both propellers. The ship was towed to B.I.W. Portland for repairs and returned to service September 29,1997.
