BIW Awarded LPD 17 R&D Funding

On August 5, the Navy awarded the Avondale Alliance a $9.7 million modification to the LPD 17 contract. Approximately $3.7 million (38%) of this work will be performed by BIW. The remainder of the award will be shared between alliance partners Hughes Aircraft (32%) and Avondale Industries (30%). This modification is for the evaluation of new production processes, shipboard automation techniques, and system design concepts that have the potential for being applied to several areas of the amphibious transport ship, including specialized coatings, variable speed motor operations, crew size analysis, and modeling and simulation of the damage control systems.

The award clearly reinforces the Navy’s desire to employ advanced technology design on this ship class and others in order to reduce the overall ownership costs throughout the service life of the ships. This award will provide another avenue for BIW to demonstrate its commitment to providing the most innovative and technologically advanced platforms available, and serves as a springboard for carrying forward a critical portion of the company’s strategic vision of providing "total surface warfare solutions for the customer – innovation, shipbuilding, and life cycle services."

The new Advanced Technology Department, headed by Jim Baskerville, is leading BIW’s efforts to "Be A Technology Leader." They are working on the application of innovative materials, fabrication processes, and ship’s system automation that will support the reductions in total ownership costs that the Navy requires for the DDG 51 and DD 21 Classes, as well as LPD 17.

The work associated with this contract modification is expected to start immediately and complete in July of 1999.
