On August 24, The United States Coast Guard announced the award of contracts to three teams to perform the initial phases of a major revitalization of the Coast Guards inventory, including replacement of the aging WHEC High Endurance Cutters. BIW is teamed with Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), who is the lead contractor, Marinette Marine, Sikorsky Aircraft, and Gibbs & Cox on the project. The program is intended to produce an Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) of fixed and rotary wing aircraft, as well as patrol boats and cutters. BIW is participating in performing ships mission analysis, total ownership cost reduction, reviewing hull forms, propulsion, manning, automation, and survivability components.
The two other teams participating in Phase I of the USCG IDS Project are led by Lockheed Martin and by Avondale Industries.
