Bath Iron Works to launch 20th AEGIS Destroyer on July 2, 2000

DDG 85 named to honor Navy Capt. David McCampbell, Medal of Honor recipient

BATH, MAINE – Bath Iron Works will launch its 20th ARLEIGH BURKE Class AEGIS guided missile destroyer, McCampbell (DDG 85) on Sunday, July 2, 2000. The West Gate, located on Washington Street in Bath, will open to the general public at Noon. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m., and the ship will launch at 2:16 p.m., slack high tide.

DDG 85 is named to honor Navy Captain David McCampbell (January 16, 1910–June 30, 1996), the Navy’s top ace with 34 confirmed aerial victories and recipient of the Medal of Honor while serving as Commander, Air Group 15, USS Essex (CV 9) during the Battle of the Philippine Sea (June 19, 1944), and the Battle of Leyte Gulf (October 24, 1944).

The Honorable Madeleine K. Albright, U.S. Secretary of State, will christen the ship.
