Apprenticeship Programs

BIW currently offers Apprenticeships in two categories: Manufacturing and Design.

Successful completion of the Apprenticeship program results in a diploma from Bath Iron Works, journeyman certification from the State of Maine, and an Associate of Science degree in Ship Production or Ship Design from Maine Maritime Academy.

Admission Requirements

All applicants must be eligible for employment at Bath Iron Works. Admission to the Apprenticeship is highly competitive. Documentation must be provided verifying the following:

  • Minimum age of 18 at time of hire
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Must achieve a passing score (Silver for Design, Bronze for Manufacturing) on the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC), Work Keys Assessment, an ACT exam. Test results are good for 3 years

NCRC testing consists of three tests: Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information.

Applying to the Apprenticeship takes place online in the same location as our other Job Opportunities. Click Careers, then Job Opportunities to open the link. If you already work at BIW, please ensure you submit an internal profile. For Manufacturing, the application is in August, 2017, and for Design it is tentative for February, 2018.

Test Dates

BIW sponsors NCRC testing, and the next tests are tentatively scheduled for October 2017 for Manufacturing and April 2018 for Design.
