BIW currently offers Apprenticeships in two categories: Manufacturing and Design.
Successful completion of the Apprenticeship program results in a diploma from Bath Iron Works, journeyman certification from the State of Maine, and an Associate of Science degree in Ship Production or Ship Design from Maine Maritime Academy.
All applicants must be eligible for employment at Bath Iron Works. Admission to the Apprenticeship is highly competitive. Documentation must be provided verifying the following:
- Minimum age of 18 at time of hire
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Must achieve a passing score (Silver for Design, Bronze for Manufacturing) on the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC), Work Keys Assessment, an ACT exam. Test results are good for 3 years
NCRC testing consists of three tests: Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information.
BIW sponsors NCRC testing, and the next tests are tentatively scheduled for October 2015 for Manufacturing and May 2016 for Design.
