On May 21, 1930, Corsair IV was launched at Bath Iron Works. It was a T.S.turbo-electric yacht for J.P.Morgan II of New York. The yacht cost $2.5 million to build, which is around $60 million in today’s dollars. Not only was it Morgan’s largest yacht, but at the time it was the largest yacht ever built in the U.S. When asked, “Sir, how much will it cost to operate a boat of this size?” Morgan’s response was, “Sir, if you have to ask that question, you can’t afford it.”
