BIW’s third hull, Castine, was delivered to the US Navy in October of 1893. It was a gunboat that spent much of its time in international waters, from Mozambique to the Philippine Islands. In 1916, the ship was in the harbor of Santo Domingo with USS Memphis (previously named Tennessee), a large armored cruiser, when a heavy swell developed. Castine managed to survive the 70-foot waves, although it suffered damage. Unfortunately USS Memphis was completely wrecked, with many of its crew badly injured or killed.
