Service Anniversary Banquet: Glitz, Glam and Good Times

This year’s spring Service Anniversary Banquet had a special guest – Les Waltz, a 60-year employee!

Waltz, who works as a Material Handler in Structural Fabrication, was hired in 1964. He was joined by dozens of other honorees – people celebrating 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 years with the company – and their guests. A fall banquet is planned for people celebrating those milestones who were hired in the second half of the year and those who were unable to attend the spring banquet.

Held at the Sheraton Portland Sable Oaks, the event featured a reception and a dinner in the grand ballroom. A video with memories for each of the employees’ hiring years played as well as a slide show covering the decades at the shipyard.

BIW President Chuck Krugh welcomed the honorees and thanked their family members for being supportive of their shipbuilding careers.

“As we recognize the significant milestones in our colleagues’ careers tonight, we all share the pride that comes with building and supporting the ships of the U.S. Navy,” Krugh said.

“I would like to thank all of our employees marking a milestone this year for their committed service to General Dynamics Bath Iron Works,” he said. “Your example serves to remind us that it is the people of this shipyard who make Bath Built Best Built.”

Behind him stood an elegant wooden case displaying the 12 unique coins, one for each five-year increment. When Waltz was called the platform, he was presented with a display case including each of the coins.

“I am honored to present a set of twelve coins to Les this evening,” Krugh said. “The dedication and loyalty he has demonstrated in his career is truly outstanding.”

Participants said the event was a great opportunity to socialize with friends and coworkers.

Linda Erskine, Program Manager Supply Chain, was celebrating 35 years with the company.

“It was nice to be recognized for my many years of service to BIW and to catch up with people I haven’t talked to in a very long time,” she said afterward. “I thoroughly enjoyed this event and appreciated the effort everyone made to make it so memorable.”

Deborah Oliver, Senior Principal Project Manager was celebrating 35 years at BIW. “My husband Chris (retired BIW) got all dressed up like we were heading to the Grammy Awards!” she said. “Building Navy ships is critically important, but the anniversary dinner made me feel that we, the workers, are the most important part of it all.”
