Home From The Helm Veterans Day

Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, we celebrate and remember our brothers and sisters who have served our country in all branches of our military. We especially want to remember those who have fallen in the defense of our country, our families and our way of life. Not everyone answers the call to serve, but those who do respond, serve for all of us! For those who have served, I want to say THANK YOU for answering the call to defend our great country!

On this special day, I reached out to Preservation Technician Bill Henderson as he had shared a poem with me when I first met him. Bill, a 40-year Master Shipbuilder, wrote this poem back on September 26, 2020, at 0236 (2:36 a.m.). He has allowed me to share it with you, and I hope it speaks to you like it did to me.

Remember Me

I served her well
In dark of night,
In bitter cold
The common fight,
I held my ground
And had to say,
Would I see another day?
I served her well
In jungle heat,
With muck and mire
Upon my feet,
I served her well
In wind swept sands,
On foreign soil
In distant lands,
Yet I know
That I did give,
A sacrifice that men might live,
In freedom
Shared by common man,
A country strong
And will to stand,
I am many yet am one,
Who gave and fought,
My battles done,
For the life that I did give
Will once again in memories live,
That when the stars and stripes you see,
I served her well remember me.
