Bath Iron Works Delivers Its First Hull

On May 31st, 1890, Bath Iron Works delivered its first hull, Cottage City, to the Maine Steamship Co. It was 232 feet long, 40 feet wide with a draft of just over 16 feet and was powered by a triple expansion steam engine capable of producing 1,400 horsepower. Cottage City hauled passengers and freight between Portland and New York City for seven years before being sold to a company serving the Pacific Northwest. The ship was lost in a storm off British Columbia in 1911.
