DiMillo’s Floating Restaurant

When DiMillo’s floating restaurant in Portland was in danger of going under – literally – in 1993 they looked to BIW to shore up the decrepit hull. The restaurant had been built in 1941 as a car ferry and the hull was wasting away. Fabricators in Bath produced hull sections that were assembled at BIW’s Portland facility. The new hull was submerged in the Portland drydock, the restaurant floated over it, and then the drydock was floated. The restaurant settled into the new, rugged hull, which was a perfect fit. DiMillo’s was only closed for two weeks and reopened for Mother’s Day.
