Thirty seven years ago this month, BIW delivered HSTC-1 – at the time, the largest barge built in the United States. Built for the California & Hawaiian Sugar Co., the 634-foot barge was an integrated tug-barge, meaning its propulsion was a tug that clamped onto the barge, forming a single vessel. The configuration allowed for a much smaller crew than would be required for a cargo ship that size.
