Commuter Bus
We partner with Western Maine Transportation Services (WMTS) to offer a bus route from Lewiston, as well as BREEZ to offer a bus route between Portland and BIW.
Western Maine Transportation Services (WMTS), runs a Lewiston to Bath bus service supporting BIW first shift hours Monday to Friday, called the BlueLine Express. The fare is $5 each way.
The (Metro) BREEZ Bus runs a route from Portland to Bath to coincide with first shift, with stops to Yarmouth, Freeport and Brunswick. The fare is $4 each way, with a reduced fare for certain groups.
Lewiston Bus
With support from a transportation grant from the state of Maine, BIW is contributing to the cost of operating the bus to enable WMTS to offer a fare of $5 each way. The cost of commuting on the bus is payable with pre-tax dollars using a Commuter Savings Account offered as a benefit to employees through BIW.
To reserve a seat, call 800-393-9335 / 1, by 4 p.m., one business day ahead.

How do I reserve a seat?
To reserve a seat, call 800-393-9335 / 1, by 4 p.m., one business day ahead.
Does BIW operate the bus?
No. WMTS operates the bus. BIW is subsidizing the cost of operation to keep fares affordable to riders. All operational questions should be directed to WMTS.
Where does it stop?
Route originates at Oak Street bus station, 44 Oak St. in Lewiston, stops at the park and ride at 1243 Lisbon St. in Lewiston then at the park and ride at 689 Lisbon St., Lisbon Falls before arriving at BIW to drop off at North, West and South gates. Ride home pickup is at Bath Information Center, with stops on the return trip being the reverse of the inbound route.
Where is the bus located at the Lisbon Falls stop?
You can find the bus at the Rusty Lantern, by the gray shed in back of the Irving gas station.
Do I have to commit to riding the bus every day?
No. Riders can ride a few days a week or very occasionally, such as when their car is being repaired.
How will I pay?
Riders may purchase tickets in advance through the Token Transit cell phone app or by cash or check from the bus driver (exact change only) or the WMTS offices at 76 Merrow Road, Auburn.
How does the app work?
The Token Transit app keeps a person’s tickets in a digital wallet on their phone and when boarding the bus, the person activates a ticket and shows it to the driver.
How do I get the app?
Download the app, available for both Apple and Android phones, by clicking here.
Can I be sure there will be a seat and the bus won’t be full?
WMTS encourages riders to notify them ahead of time, at least before 5 p.m. the day before, that the rider needs a seat. Regular riders can reserve a seat on an ongoing basis.
What happens if the bus is full?
WMTS will evaluate ridership and strive to provide buses with capacity for everyone needing a ride; however, they are unable to change bus sizes on a daily basis so if there are more people than seats, those who did not reserve a seat in advance will be admitted first come, first served.
How do I know the bus is on time?
WMTS plans to offer potential riders the chance to receive updates by text about operations.
What if the bus arrives at BIW late?
Like van pools, car pools and other shared transportation, employees using the new WMTS bus service must meet all CBA requirements related to on-time arrival at the start of their shift.
Are there discounts for purchasing multiple tickets?
Yes. WMTS offers a punch pass of 10 rides for the price of 9, so five-day a week riders save $5 each week. Unlimited ride monthly passes are $190 saving up to $40 a month.
How do I get more information?
Contact WMTS at wmtsbus.org or at 800-784-9335, option #1 for more details.

GO MAINE
This commuter program helps you find ride options from your area and by shift, and rewards you for your green commutes.
BIW is a partner of GO MAINE, an online, statewide travel resource for finding commuting options like carpools, vanpools or ride sharing that offers benefits to BIW employees including emergency ride home reimbursement. Earn rewards for recording your trips or telecommutes!
GO MAINE FAQ
Learn about everything this state-wide commuter program has to over, from rewards for green commutes to emergency rides home.
How does the Emergency Ride Home work?
If you experience a qualified emergency, GO MAINE can reimburse you for your trip. In order to receive this benefit, a member MUST record their greener trip (i.e. non-drive alone) on their GO MAINE trip calendar on the same day they are requesting this benefit and currently be employed by BIW as we are a participating GO MAINE partner.
Qualifying emergencies are:
- A sudden personal illness or emergency
- An immediate family member (spouse/domestic partner, child, parent, grandparent, sibling, or equivalent family member on your spouse/domestic partner’s side) has an unexpected illness or emergency
- A carpool/vanpool driver has an emergency or unexpected overtime
- A supervisor requires you to work unscheduled overtime
Members who meet the specified criteria can access the Emergency Ride Home reward in the “Featured” section of the “Rewards” tab. Select the reward and complete the brief survey questions about the ride you need, and GO Maine will send you an email with the information you’ll need for your ERH benefit.
For detailed information, visit gomaine.org or call 800.280.RIDE (7433).
What types of situations do not qualify for the Emergency Ride Home benefit?
- Personal errands
- Planned medical appointments
- Business-related travel
- On-the-job injury
- Weather-related events
- Transportation system delays
- Utility system failures
- Building closings
- Voluntary or scheduled overtime
- Termination
If I am already in a van pool or car pool can I register for rewards?
Yes. You can get rewarded for what you already do!
Does GO MAINE want to eliminate our current private van pools?
No. Private vanpools are important. BIW and GO MAINE are encouraging more vanpools, carpools, and other forms of ride sharing.
Can I use GO MAINE if I’m already in a carpool or if I ride with my spouse/child?
Yes.
I drive myself to work and I use private parking, so I won’t benefit from this.
If you want to lower the cost of your commute, GO MAINE is a way to find people who would be interested in riding with you.
Do I have to accept people into my pool?
GO MAINE has a feature that allows you to indicate you are not accepting additional riders.
Do I have to accept everyone who asks to ride with me?
No.
How do I setup recurring ride logs?
When you go in to record a trip, GO MAINE will ask whether it is a commute, a round trip, how many travelers are in the vehicle, and the names of the other GO MAINE members. It will also ask whether you do this ride every week, and if you answer yes to that question, it will ask you to check off which days you make that trip, and that will set up the recurring trips. You can also name that trip (for example, “Work”) to remind you which trip that is when you view your trips.
How do the rewards work?
Points are awarded for the first two trips that you record in your account each day. One-way trips earn 100 points and round trips earn 200 points. Upon initial registration you will receive 1000 bonus points.
What are the rewards I can redeem?
You can earn discounts on shopping, dining, services and local activities. You can also be entered in drawings for other prizes, including gift cards.
Do BIW’s Park & Rides qualify as ridesharing?
GO MAINE does not consider the BIW Park & Rides a qualifying commute. However, if you share a ride or carpool and then use the BIW Taste of Maine, VIP, or West Bath Park and Rides, your ride share or carpool will qualify. If you ride share using a Maine DOT-maintained or non-BIW maintained park and ride, that will qualify you to earn rewards.
Can I find rides by shift?
Yes. GO MAINE has added the ability to search for rides by shift.
